Way of the Samurai 3 follows the same principles as its predecessors, offering an authentic setting, a deep sword-fighting system, and cause-and-effect role-playing. This time around, the game takes place during the Sengoku Period and puts the player in the sandals of a lone samurai. The player must navigate the world of Amana, ruled by Shuzen Fujimori, who has overthrown the former superior Lord Sakurai. However, Fujimori's rule is not well-liked, and he must use an iron fist to maintain control.
The player's choices determine their path in the game. They can join Fujimori Clan, protect the villagers in Takatana, or leave Amana for good, leading to a complete reset of the game. The game offers almost complete freedom to roam the eight zones of Amana while following the avatar. The story arc allows for over 20 possible endings, depending on the player's actions and choices throughout the game.
The gameplay involves making three choices: listen, apologize/beg, or attack. Begging a merchant earns a free item but reduces respect, leading to fewer Samurai Points after death or completion of the game. The game is divided into scenes with marked next possible ones on the in-game map, making it easier for the player to follow.
The game features a realistic day and night cycle that affects NPCs' behavior even when the player isn't interfering. The player can talk to characters, accept jobs, shop for items, and engage in mini-games like chopping vegetables or fillet fish. Decisions influence relationships with groups, changing how they interact with the player.
The game includes dozens of swords, hammers, and spears to choose from, each with its own quality and durability level. The player must consider these factors when selecting a weapon, as it affects combat moves. Special actions are available for unlock, staying available in each new game. The player can decide whether to kill an enemy or use a blunt attack, impacting reputation and future encounters.
During the course of the game, the player will meet possible partners who may join them or be "romanced". These relationships grant additional combat benefits and access to mini-games and side jobs. Romance options even allow partners to live with the player in Takatane village, providing a home and access to personal items.
