Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is a reimagining of Max & the Magic Marker . The protagonist Max comes home and discovers his younger brother Felix playing with his toys. Max is furious and searches the internet for a spell to make his brother disappear. When he recites it, a portal is opened and his brother is taken away by Mustacho, a large creature. He soon regrets this mistake and follows through the portal to rescue his brother.
The gameplay involves 2D side-scrolling platforming with a focus on physics to solve puzzles. Max can move around, jump, slide down, swing, climb ropes, duck through narrow passages, and climb platforms. However, he cannot attack directly; instead, he uses a magic marker in creative ways. The old lady turns his marker into a magical one, which has five functions: drawing platforms, sprouting branches, creating vines, cooling down lava, and shooting fireballs.
The player must use the marker's functions in specific, orange glowing points to solve puzzles and progress through levels. These often involve combining various functions of the marker in succession or with time limits. Max also needs to avoid enemies, lure them into a specific direction, and move objects. The marker has a limited supply, so certain elements like platforms must be destroyed to refill it. Players can showcase their creativity by drawing pillars at different heights, creating rolling branches, or forming zip-lines with vines.
The game consists of seven chapters with twenty levels in total. Additionally, there are two types of collectibles: glowing fragments of an artifact and swivelling eyes used by Mustacho to spy on Max. These collectibles are usually located in hard-to-reach places.
