The LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game for handheld platforms offers a similar gaming experience to its console counterpart, but with some key differences. The graphics are simpler, and the levels are smaller and have their own unique design. This version also introduces a new dueling mechanic that sets it apart from other LEGO games.
Players can still embark on an adventure through the events of the four Pirates of the Caribbean films, released as part of a tie-in with On Stranger Tides. The game features cutscenes from both console and handheld versions, with some being reused and others newly created to fit the new design. One notable difference between the two is that the handheld version has only four levels per movie, compared to five in the console version.
The gameplay follows the standard LEGO formula: players control different characters with unique abilities, requiring them to work together to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. Collecting studs, bricks, and other items like medallions and rum bottles can unlock bonuses. A new feature exclusive to the 3DS version is pirate duels, where players must press a button rapidly followed by a quick-time event to successfully strike an enemy.
One of the unique features of the 3DS version is its multiplayer functionality. It supports the StreetPass feature for collecting Play Coins, which can be spent to buy characters. These characters can then be used in pirate duels against other 3DS users, with the winner earning more Play Coins.
