J.R.R. Tolkien's War in Middle Earth is a 16-bit strategy game that brings the events of the One Ring to life. Tolkien's War in Middle Earth starts with three hobbits, Frodo, Sam, and Pippin, surrounded by nine individual units of Nazgul near the Shire. The player must decide how their heroes and armies progress, despite the conventional storyline.
Victory is attained by sending the ring bearer to Mt. Doom successfully. However, any hero, including Frodo, may die during combat. If this happens, a new ring bearer will be appointed to carry the One Ring. The player will lose if the enemy gains possession of the One Ring and reaches Barad-Dur or seizes three major allied citadels.
The gameplay is divided into three map levels: Full Map Level, Campaign Level, and Animation Level. Full Map Level shows the whole map of Middle Earth on one screen with all heroes and armies visible as colored dots. The Campaign Level offers more detail of locations and units, while the Animation Level features animated encounters for characters.
Combat encounters take place at the Campaign Level, where the player can choose to enter a battle or ignore an event. Combat orders consist of charge, engage, withdraw, and retreat. The battle ends when all units are completely destroyed or retreats.
