Call of Duty: Black Ops III is the fourth game in the Black Ops subseries of the Call of Duty first-person shooter franchise and the twelfth main title overall. It follows up on Call of Duty: Black Ops II, but not as a direct sequel.
The game is set in the same universe as Black Ops II and references past events indirectly. The story takes place in a far dystopian future, 40 years after the previous title, where soldiers are equipped with DNI, the Direct Neural Interface. Players control a character who needs DNI after a failed mission and must investigate a CIA black site in Singapore. The story deals with an artificial intelligence called Corvus, privacy, cybernetic enhancements, secret experiments, and characters like Commander John Taylor and Dr. Yousef Salim.
Missions include linear first-person shooter levels with free movement as well as sections played from a stationary position such as a vehicle. Players can unlock new abilities called Cyber Cores and Rigs, which provide new attacks and movements. The campaign can be played cooperatively with up to four players.
The multiplayer mode returns with the same abilities, but mostly enabled by default, focusing on selecting weapons, items, and enhancements. Players choose a Specialist, represented by a class, which has unique abilities and look. Four are available right away, and others are unlocked gradually. The game also introduces Unlock tokens, earned through challenges and leveling up, to unlock new equipment.
Game modes include many returning modes such as Domination, Gun Game, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy, and Uplink. A new Zombies mode is introduced with an experience system, special abilities, and power-ups that can be selected in the loadout. Another new game mode is Freerun, where players can run through obstacle courses using new abilities to get the fastest times.
When finished with the regular campaign, the Nightmare campaign is unlocked, remixing the original campaign with different enemies, random weapons, and power-ups.
