Defiance , a third-person shooter set in a persistent universe, was made as a tie-in to the US SyFy television series of the same name. The game takes place several decades into the future in the San Francisco Bay Area, following a war between humans and an alien race known as the Votans. A war that changed the Earth's surface dramatically after the arrival of the Votans, who were looking for a new home after their planet was destroyed.

The game features advanced character customization options. Players can customize everything from clothing to facial hair style, and choose to be either human or an Irathient, a humanoid alien species. There is no strict class system, instead players can choose one of four origins: veterans, outlaws, machinists, or survivalists. These origins don't affect abilities or equipment, but provide a starting point for the character.

Defiance on Playstation 3 was released on 2nd April 2013 and is classified as a first-person shooter game. Players take on the role of an "Ark Hunter" hired by a wealthy industrialist to search for hidden alien power. The game's key feature is its Arkfall Events, which are dynamic events that bring humans, aliens, and monsters together in order to obtain expensive alien technology.
