Disney Infinity 2.0 is the successor to Disney Infinity , introducing a new game with an entirely different concept. The game is an action-adventure where players place physical figurines on the infinity base and they are then introduced as characters in the game. The characters level up as they are used and progress is stored in the character itself, meaning they can level up further using them on a different system or location. The figurines that can be purchased are platform independent, with two large groups: Marvel Super Heroes and Disney Originals.
The game has two main modes: story (Play Set mode) and sandbox (Toy Box 2.0). In the story mode, players use play sets that resemble crystal figurines placed on the base to enable a play set. Infinity 2.0 supports multiple, self-contained story modes based on purchased play sets. The core gameplay is a traditional action platformer, where characters are guided through the game world and have different types of moves. As characters level up, new abilities and attributes become available through a skill tree.
The sandbox Toy Box 2.0 allows players to use all their characters and create their own games by placing objects, buying new ones, designing scenery, applying game logic, and sharing creations with others. This mode supports both local and online multiplayer as well. Some characters are only available in the Toy Box mode and this mode provides various features such as frameworks for quickly designing a specific game type. Power discs and toy box game discs introduce new toys, textures, skies, vehicles etc.
The new play sets cannot be used with the original Disney Infinity , but this version is backwards compatible with all Toy Box content unlocked with the figurines of the first version. This means that all figurines and power discs released for the first version can be used in this edition, but limited to the Toy Box mode.
The console version is called Disney Infinity: Edition 2.0 , while the Windows and Windows Apps entries are called Disney Infinity 2.0: Play Without Limits . The PC edition is free-to-play, with purchased figurines requiring a web code to unlock content. Content registered through a Disney account can be transferred to the PC version.
The PlayStation and Wii U versions of the game had limited early buyers receive Disney Infinity: Edition 2.0 - Marvel Super Heroes: Toy Box Game Discs for free.
