Embracing the darkness, Batman , follows the Caped Crusader as he faces off against his arch-nemesis, the Joker, who has once again escaped from Arkham Asylum. With Gotham City in chaos, Batman must navigate seven stages to restore order and bring an end to the Joker's nefarious plans.

Players control Batman , who wields a trusty gauntlet that shoots basic bullets by default. Upgrades can be obtained through power-ups scattered throughout levels, allowing for access to more powerful homing and energy weapons. These upgrades can also be charged up for secondary attacks, each with its unique abilities. Additionally, Batman possesses a slide move, effective against most enemies and some bosses.

Boss battles introduce a new system, where Batman's life is measured by points rather than traditional health bars. In these sections, Batman enjoys increased health and the ability to withstand more hits as he faces off against formidable foes.

The game features diverse levels, including a snowy landscape, a moving train, a military base, and sewers. Some levels require players to dash and dodge explosions while vehicles speed by in the background. Others feature Batman activating a jetpack and playing through short side-scrolling shooter segments.

This Batman game stands out from other titles in the series, as it was not directly based on a movie or television adaptation.
