The Death and Return of Superman sees "Doomsday" emerge, threatening the world, which can only be stopped by Superman. However, in his efforts to save humanity, he sacrifices himself. This leads to four other characters stepping forward, each claiming to be the real hero. The game begins with Superman, then progresses through Steel, the Eradicator, Cyborg, and Superboy, each with unique abilities that alter gameplay strategies.
The gameplay is typical of a standard beat-em-up, featuring punches, throws, and special moves.
