Chessmaster II continues the tradition of the Chessmaster series on PlayStation. The game supports a real-time 3D board, more than a dozen chess sets, a variety of AI-controlled characters to play against, in addition to English language advice and a host of teaching features. There is also a complete chess tutorial.

The game's story mode allows players to compete against the computer or other human opponents in a series of matches, with the ultimate goal of becoming the champion. As players progress through the game, they will encounter increasingly difficult opponents and must use their skills and strategy to emerge victorious.
