The Last of Us is a survival horror action game set in a post-apocalyptic Boston twenty years after the outbreak of the Cordyceps Brain Infection. The story follows Joel, an independent survivor, who teams up with Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, to escort her out of the city for the Fireflies' resistance group. Their journey takes them through various environments and regions, including Pittsburgh, Colorado, and Salt Lake City.
The player controls Joel from a third-person perspective, with occasional control of Ellie in later chapters. The gameplay combines action elements, exploration, and puzzle-solving, with a focus on stealth and limited ammo. Enemies include various types of infected and human survivors, each with their own characteristics. The player must use ladders, planks, and other items to climb and navigate, and rely on stealth tactics to avoid detection.
Progress through the story is linear, but exploration is encouraged, allowing players to gather items and craft new tools. The city's environment is largely destroyed, but nature has reclaimed some areas, offering a mix of urban and natural landscapes. Items can be collected to upgrade Joel's abilities, such as firing rate, reloading speed, and ammo capacity.
Multiplayer mode, Factions, allows for matches with up to eight players simultaneously. Players choose between factions and compete in team deathmatch-style gameplay, focusing on stealth, gathering supplies, and crafting items. The game features a clan system, where players can customize their characters, unlock perks, and progress through the experience system.
