AI: The Somnium Files is a detective thriller game that follows Kaname Date, a former police officer who lost his memories and left eye after an incident six years ago. Date's new partner is Aiba, an advanced AI housed in his prosthetic eye, which assists him in both real-world investigations and diving into people's dream worlds, known as Somnium.
In the game, Date's investigation focuses on a series of murders with a connection to his missing memories and the Original Cyclops Serial Killings. As he delves deeper into the case, he discovers that each victim had their left eye removed, leading him to suspect a serial killer dubbed the New Cyclops Killer.
The gameplay is divided between real-world investigations and Somnium segments. In the real world, Date examines crime scenes and talks to suspects using a point-and-click format. Aiba's special vision modes can be used to examine environments when normal human vision is insufficient. Violent confrontations are resolved through quick time events where Aiba runs simulations to guide Date through the fight safely.
In Somnium, players control Aiba directly, navigating a subject's dream world within a six-minute real-world time limit. The perception of time in a dream allows players to shave time off their actions, but each action has a different duration. By interacting with objects and solving puzzles based on dream logic, Aiba can break mental locks and uncover the truth. Certain Somnia have multiple solutions, leading down different story paths.
The game's storyline is fully revealed only by completing all possible paths in Somnium, making it a challenging and engaging experience for players.
