Flashback: The Quest for Identity is an action-adventure game set in the near future. In the year 2025, humanity has colonized several planets in the Solar System, but at a great cost to the environment and human life. The player takes on the role of Max Rockatansky, a man who wakes up from cryosleep with no memory of who he is or why he's there.

Gameplay involves exploring various locations, including planets and space stations, while fighting against rival forces. The gameplay is similar to other action-adventure games of the time, with an emphasis on puzzle-solving and combat.
