Ristar on Sega Game Gear is a sidescrolling platformer about Sega's mascot, Ristar , fighting his way through six planets to defeat the evil tyrant Greedy. The game has the same plot and similar themes as its Genesis counterpart.

The gameplay of Ristar on Game Gear is similar to the Genesis version, with some tweaks to moves and enemy mechanics. The game also features collectable mini-stars scattered throughout the levels, which award an extra life when collected 100 times.
