Mega Turrican is set in a world where the Dark Forces have reassembled, and it's up to you as a member of the USS Freedom Forces to stop them. Your mission is to navigate through numerous large levels, searching for secrets, enemies to shoot, and power-ups to upgrade your arsenal.

The gameplay involves shooting down enemies while avoiding obstacles and navigating through treacherous terrain. You can choose from three upgradeable shots: a multiple, a laser, and a rebound. Additionally, you can use wheel-mode, which makes you invincible and allows you to lay mines or explore previously inaccessible areas, as long as you have enough special energy.
