Dragon Ball Z: For Kinect is a 3D one-on-one fighting game based on the Dragon Ball Z anime television series. It is played from a first-person perspective and the character can only be controlled through the Kinect motion recognition peripheral. It is the first console game in the series to use a first-person perspective, drawing inspiration from the arcade game Dragon Ball Z: V.R.V.S. , while visually resembling the style of earlier games by the same developer.
The main game mode Saiyan Saga Story starts with a fight between Goku and Piccolo against Raditz. The battles are not linked together into a single story, but borrow elements from different storylines and sagas, such as Babidi Saga, Cell Saga, Frieza Saga, and the battle against Great Ape Vegeta. Battles are highly choreographed to resemble the TV series, linking short fighting sequences with cinematic interludes.
Gameplay involves basic attacks like punches and kicks, which fill a power bar when done well, triggering an air sequence where fighting continues. Automated combos also appear, switching the perspective to third-person. Defensive moves include dodging left and right or holding hands in front of your face to block. The game tracks combo rates and remaining life points at the bottom of the screen.
Special moves like the Kamehameha attack are performed by charging from specific stances, unique for each character, with a vertical meter on the left side of the screen. Certain parts of fights also involve quick time events where icons show which move to perform quickly. After each fight, the player is ranked based on time, health, combos, score, and win bonus. Unlocking new characters can be done by defeating them or completing stages.
The Score Attack mode focuses on getting high scores, free character selection, and removing cutscenes during battles. Over 50 characters are available, with many variations and forms, and more than 100 moves to practice in a tutorial. The game includes an episode of the anime Episodes of Bardock , available from the main menu.
The game for Xbox 360 was released on 9th October 2012 and features over 50 playable characters, many variations and forms, and more than 100 moves to practice. Copies of the game include a Super Saiyan Goku hair accessory with QR codes that can be scanned to access bonuses and move variations.
