DayZ is a commercial, standalone version of what was started as a modification with the same name for ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead. It is a multiplayer open world survival horror game with zombies in a persistent environment, the fictional post-Soviet state Chernarus after a zombie apocalypse. The player must survive as long as possible without direct goals.
The game features different cities and smaller towns, large plains and forests, all part of a sandbox environment. Threats come from AI-controlled zombies that roam the environment and other players. Players can form temporary alliances or work together to achieve common objectives, but can also kill each other for loot. The player starts with some clothes and a flashlight near the coast of the map.
The game requires basic supplies such as food and water to be scavenged from villages. Hunting animals in the environment provides raw meat that can be cooked over a fire. Weapons and items are mainly found in villages, stores, or military bases and airports. The player has a full inventory to customize their appearance, clothing with perks, and equipment. Crafting is extensively used to create various items.
Medical supplies are essential for bandaging wounds and resisting diseases caused by spoiled food. Transfusing blood is possible, but only when the blood type is compatible or the character dies. The game features both melee and long-ranged weapons with various attachments. Vehicles can be used to get around, and direct voice communication with other players is encouraged.
Up to 40 players can join a single server, and the player profile remains persistent across servers.
