When Planet of the Apes was released on GameBoy Color in 2001, it offered a unique blend of action and adventure gameplay inspired by the classic 1960s movie series. The story follows Ulysses, a deep space astronaut who crash lands on Earth after 200 years in space, only to discover that apes have become the dominant species and nearly wiped out humanity.
The player must join forces with a group of survivors to reach the heart of the Ape Empire and stop General Ursus from launching a final attack on mankind. Along the way, they'll encounter various traps and pitfalls, including armed apes that will try to stop them at all costs. Fortunately, Ulysses has access to a range of weapons, starting with a knife and eventually upgrading to a pistol and shotgun.
The game features 13 levels, each with its own unique challenges and obstacles. The story is told through still picture cut scenes, modeled after the iconic films. Players can also use passwords to pick up where they left off or try out new levels at their leisure.
