John Blacksad, a New York black cat P.I. in early years after World War II, is hired to investigate the murder of his friend's father, Joe Dunn. The police suspect suicide, but Blacksad isn't convinced and decides to dig deeper into the case. As he delves into the world of boxing gyms, drugs, blackmails, money, and hired guns, he uncovers a complex web of conspiracies that lead him to question everything.
The game follows John Blacksad in third-person perspective with an action-camera that changes angles to give it a cinematic feel. The camera can be slightly moved to find hidden stickers, but this is not always possible as the player is limited by what the camera shows. Gameplay involves exploring locations and interacting with objects, which display icons when faced. Dialogues are time-based and result in default answers if nothing is selected before time runs out.
Blacksad's actions and words affect his stats, which can be checked at any time during gameplay. There are eight different stats, each with its opposite, and percentage bars show the player's leaning towards one side. The game lacks an inventory system, but Blacksad's carried items are used automatically when needed.
Blacksad: Under the Skin is based on the comic book series and tells a new story that is not part of any existing game adaptation.
