Defiance , a massively multiplayer third-person shooter set in a persistent universe, was created as a tie-in to the US SyFy television series of the same name. The game takes place in a future San Francisco Bay Area, where humans and aliens known as the Votans are locked in a devastating war. The Votans arrived on Earth seeking a new home after their planet was destroyed, but their presence led to catastrophic changes, including massive transformations to the Earth's surface.

Players take on the role of an "Ark Hunter" hired by a wealthy industrialist to search for hidden alien power. Defiance features advanced character customization options, allowing players to personalize everything from their clothing and facial features to their species choice. Humans and Irathients, a humanoid alien species, are the two playable factions in the game. The origins system provides a flexible way to create characters, with four options: veterans, outlaws, machinists, and survivalists. Origins serve as a starting point for character development rather than determining gameplay abilities.

Defiance is available on the Playstation 3 console and was released on April 2nd, 2013. The game's dynamic events, known as Arkfall Events, bring together humans, aliens, and monsters in a struggle to claim valuable alien technology.
