Spiral Wave is set in 2930 where the planet's energy sources are dwindling. The player assumes the role of a captain navigating the Solar System to locate an energy source. Planet positions change as they orbit around the sun, posing risks to navigation. If navigated poorly, it can result in destruction of the capital ship, ending the game.

The gameplay involves piloting a unit from a third-person shooter perspective, facing space objects and alien enemies. Shooting down enemies earns energy, while taking damage damages the shields.
