Dai Gyakuten Saiban brings the Ace Attorney series back in time to the Meiji era. The game follows Ryūnosuke Naruhodō, a young lawyer who becomes entangled in a series of mysterious cases while studying abroad. Alongside his friends and allies, including Asōgi Kazuma and Susato Mikotoba, Naruhodō must navigate the complexities of British law to clear his name and uncover the truth.
The gameplay is reminiscent of previous Ace Attorney titles, with a few innovative twists. Courtroom sessions now take place in front of a jury, who can interrupt proceedings at any time. Naruhodō's closing arguments hold significant weight, allowing him to overturn verdicts and solve cases. Outside of trials, he teams up with Herlock Sholmes to solve puzzles using the "Dance of Deduction" feature.
As with other Ace Attorney games, the story is divided into five cases:
The Adventure of the Great Departure : Naruhodō's accused of murder on a British ship, and must defend himself in court.
The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band : A passenger is killed in a locked room mystery, with Naruhodō at the center of suspicion.
The Adventure of the Runaway Room : Naruhodō takes on a trial to earn his keep, but another murder takes place during the investigation.
The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro : A Japanese exchange student is accused of stabbing a stranger in the street.
The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story : A young pickpocket is accused of murder, and Naruhodō must prove her innocence with the help of his friends.
