Beyond a Steel Sky is set ten years after the events of Beneath a Steel Sky and follows Robert Foster as he searches for his companion Milo, who was kidnapped by a group of men. The story takes place in Union City, a cyberpunk society with a complex social hierarchy and advanced technology.
Foster must navigate the city's 3D environment, interacting with its inhabitants and solving puzzles to uncover the truth behind Milo's disappearance. Along the way, he meets a cast of characters and investigates the AI that runs MINOS, the software controlling Union City. With humor and dark cyberpunk themes, the game takes players on a thrilling adventure.
The gameplay involves direct controls, allowing Foster to move freely in 3D space. Interacting with objects or characters will highlight them with a reticule, offering options such as conversation, examination, or using an object from the inventory. While conversing with characters, multiple dialogue options appear, and new topics can be explored on the right side of the screen.
Foster also acquires a scanner that enables him to hack certain devices, solving logic puzzles in the process. As these puzzles become increasingly difficult, players will encounter policy, data, media, and goal blocks with unique functions. The game features voiced characters, an objective tracker, and an in-game hint system to aid players when stuck.
With a focus on exploration and puzzle-solving, Beyond a Steel Sky offers an immersive experience without the risk of death. A separate screen tracks objectives and inventory details, ensuring players stay on track throughout their journey.
