Cinder, originally named Ben Ferris, is a playable character in the Killer Instinct fighting game franchise who debuted in the 1995 console release. He is a convicted criminal transformed into a being of pure plasma by the Ultratech corporation. Beyond the fighting series, the character also appears in the titles Freak Out (2000) and Freak Out: Extreme Freeride (2007).
During the events of the original
Killer Instinct, this fighter utilizes a high-mobility playstyle centered on rapid aerial rushes and fire-based projectiles, such as the "Trailblazer" and "Inferno" maneuvers. Within the tournament narrative, he is coerced into combat to secure a cure for his condition, establishing a permanent elemental rivalry with the ice-based alien Glacius. Following his canonical defeat, he was excluded from the immediate arcade sequel but returned for the 2013 reimagining of
Killer Instinct, which depicted him with a high-tech containment suit and a sarcastic, arrogant personality.
In the winter sports titles
Freak Out and
Freak Out: Extreme Freeride, the character transitions from combat to snowboarding, bringing his distinct thermal aesthetic to the slopes as an unlockable guest character. Historically, his visual design in the mid-1990s served as a major technical showcase for the Silicon Graphics pre-rendering technology utilized by developer Rare. This distinct graphical style helped establish the franchise's early visual identity, cementing his legacy as a memorable figure of the arcade and console transition era.
