Created by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation in 1996, Crash is a mutant bandicoot who fights to foil the world-domination plans of Doctor Neo Cortex. He is characterized by his signature spin attack and his quest to rescue his girlfriend, Tawna, in his debut game.
Designed by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin, the character was conceived to utilize the 3D graphical capabilities of his debut console. His visual appearance was finalized by artists Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson, who aimed for an expressive, cartoonish aesthetic. The original 1996 game
Crash Bandicoot achieved massive commercial success, leading to various regional and budget re-releases, including the
Greatest Hits,
Platinum,
Black Label,
The Best, and
Big Box Variant editions.
As an unofficial mascot for his platform, the character helped drive console sales and rivaled established industry icons. The franchise quickly expanded with critically acclaimed sequels, including
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and
Crash Bandicoot: Warped, alongside the kart racer
Crash Team Racing. Following the transition of the intellectual property to other publishers, the character appeared on multiple platforms. His enduring popularity led to a modern resurgence, highlighted by the remastered compilation
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the direct sequel
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time.
