Detective Pikachu is a unique, deep-voiced Pikachu who can communicate with humans, specifically his partner Tim Goodman. He debuted in the 2016 Nintendo 3DS game Great Detective Pikachu, which was expanded and released globally as Detective Pikachu in 2018. He returned to solve new mysteries in the 2023 Nintendo Switch sequel, Detective Pikachu Returns.
Distinguished by his deerstalker hat and a strong addiction to black coffee, this self-proclaimed great detective lacks the agility and powerful electric attacks of typical Pokémon of his species. Instead, he relies on his keen intellect, interrogation skills, and observational abilities to solve cases in Ryme City, a metropolis where humans and Pokémon coexist.
Developed by Creatures Inc., the character's narrative journey began with the Japanese digital release of Great Detective Pikachu (2016) on the Nintendo 3DS. This was followed by the expanded physical and digital global release Detective Pikachu (2018), which launched alongside a special, oversized Amiibo figure that unlocked helpful in-game hints. The storyline continued on the Nintendo Switch with Detective Pikachu Returns (2023), as well as its promotional physical release Detective Pikachu Returns [Amazon Exclusive] (2023), which bundled the game with exclusive physical merchandise. Beyond his video game appearances, the character's unique personality and concept served as the direct inspiration for the 2019 live-action/CGI film adaptation, cementing his status as a major spin-off figure within the broader Pokémon franchise.
