About

In the 1995 and 1996 releases of Johnny Bazookatone, Johnny is a rock star who must travel to the Underworld to rescue his beloved guitar, Anita, from the demon El Diablo. He uses his guitar-shaped weapon, which functions as both a gun and a thruster, to defeat enemies and navigate through the game's levels.
Developed by Arc Developments and published by U.S. Gold, the character debuted in the 1995 platformer Johnny Bazookatone for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer and PlayStation. The game subsequently expanded to MS-DOS and the Sega Saturn in 1996, alongside a notable North American PlayStation "Long Box" release. Designed during the mid-1990s boom of pre-rendered 3D graphics, Johnny's visual aesthetic features a towering purple pompadour and a sharp suit, blending 1950s rockabilly style with the era's signature cartoon attitude.
The character's identity is heavily tied to the game's musical theme. The soundtrack, composed by Keith Tinman, features a mix of acid jazz, funk, and blues, which was heavily promoted during the game's marketing campaign; certain European big-box releases even bundled a standalone audio CD of the soundtrack. Despite the high-production values of Johnny's character sprite and the fluid animations created using Advanced Computer Art techniques, the game received mixed contemporary reviews. Critics often cited frustrating level design and loose controls, which prevented Johnny from achieving the mascot-level longevity of contemporaries like Rayman or Earthworm Jim. Today, the character remains a distinct cult symbol of the 32-bit multimedia era.
