Johnny Cage is a martial arts action movie star who enters the tournament to prove his fighting skills are legitimate. He debuted in the original 1993 Mortal Kombat and appeared in sequels including Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 4, and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Known for his signature shadow kick and green energy attacks, he is one of the franchise's primary protagonists.
Originally modeled after martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme for the franchise's inception in
Mortal Kombat (1993), the character's narrative arc evolves from comic relief to a disciplined defender of Earthrealm. While absent from the initial arcade release of
Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) due to behind-the-scenes actor disputes, he remained a fixture in
Mortal Kombat II (1994) and
Mortal Kombat 4 (1998).
In
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002) and its
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance [Platinum] (2003) re-release, his storyline focuses on rallying Earth's warriors after the death of Liu Kang. The character's enduring popularity led to specialized physical releases, such as the
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon [Premium Edition Johnny Cage] (2006) collector's edition, which featured his likeness on the cover packaging and exclusive bonus content. Throughout these iterations, his gameplay design utilizes split punches and forceball projectiles, contrasting with the more mystical abilities of his peers.
