Marie, whose full name is Marlone, is the titular character of the 1997 PlayStation RPG Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg and its various ports, including Marie no Atelier GB. As a failing student at the Salburg Royal Academy of Alchemy, she is given five years to create an outstanding item to graduate. She also appears in crossover titles such as Atelier Marie + Ellie: The Alchemist of Salburg 1 & 2.
The character's legacy spans multiple platforms and expanded editions. Following her debut, she appeared in the Sega Saturn port
Marie no Atelier ver.1.3 (1997) and the PlayStation re-release
Marie no Atelier Plus - Salberg no Renkinjutsushi (1998), which added new endings and voice acting. Her portable adventures continued on the Game Boy Color with
Marie no Atelier GB (2000) and its limited
Marie No Atelier GB [Deluxe Package] (2000).
Her interactions with successor Ellie were compiled in
Atelier Marie + Ellie: The Alchemist of Salburg 1 & 2 [Premium Box] (2000) and further explored in the WonderSwan Color release
Alchemist Marie & Elie: Futari No Atelier (2001). While the name Marie also historically associates with the early text adventure
Marie Celeste (1982), the modern gaming legacy of the name is firmly defined by Gust's pioneering alchemy franchise. As the foundation of the long-running
Atelier series, her gameplay loop of gathering ingredients, synthesizing items, and managing time established the core mechanics that defined the entire franchise's subsequent formula.
