T'ai Fu is the last surviving member of the Tiger clan in a mythical ancient China populated by anthropomorphic animal clans. In T'ai Fu: Wrath of the Tiger, he embarks on a quest to defeat the Dragon Master, Madman, who destroyed his clan. Throughout his journey, he learns various martial arts styles from other animal clans, including the Leopard, Monkey, and Crane styles, to master his own Tiger style.
Created by DreamWorks Interactive and published by Activision, the character debuted in the 1999 PlayStation release
T'ai Fu: Wrath of the Tiger (also formatted as
Tai Fu Wrath of the Tiger). Renowned voice actor John DiMaggio provided the vocal performance for the character, lending a gruff, heroic presence to the feline protagonist. The game's production capitalized on DreamWorks' cinematic background, featuring fluid character animations and a distinct art style inspired by traditional Chinese mythology and martial arts cinema.
In terms of gameplay design, T'ai Fu's moveset expands beyond basic strikes to include physics-based platforming, chi-based projectile attacks, and cinematic finishing moves. Players execute combos that seamlessly transition between the distinct animal stances he acquires throughout the adventure.
Though
T'ai Fu: Wrath of the Tiger did not spawn a long-running franchise or direct sequels, the character remains a notable representative of the late-1990s anthropomorphic action-platformer genre. The title showcased DreamWorks Interactive's versatility prior to their acquisition by Electronic Arts and subsequent rebranding as EA Los Angeles, making T'ai Fu a unique historical marker in the developer's early portfolio.
