About

Zak McKracken is a tabloid journalist working for the National Inquisitor in San Francisco. In the game Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, he must prevent space aliens from reducing the intelligence of the human race. Along with his companions, he travels the globe and to Mars to solve puzzles and save Earth.
Designed by David Fox and published by Lucasfilm Games, the character debuted in the 1988 graphic adventure Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. This initial release on the Commodore 64 and Apple II was followed by ports of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders in 1989 for MS-DOS, Amiga, and Atari ST, as well as a Japanese FM Towns version. A later edition of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders arrived in 1993.
As the second game to utilize the SCUMM engine, the title established gameplay conventions like the verb-grid interface. The character's design, often featuring a classic nose-and-glasses disguise, became iconic within the point-and-click genre. The game's narrative drew heavily on popular 1980s conspiracy theories, New Age ideas, and ancient astronaut hypotheses. Despite mixed contemporary reviews regarding its challenging mazes and potential dead-ends, the protagonist and his quest achieved cult status. This enduring popularity led to numerous fan-developed sequels and tributes, cementing the character's legacy alongside other classic LucasArts adventure heroes.
