Chunsoft Co., Ltd. is a Japanese developer founded by Koichi Nakamura, famous for developing the early entries in the Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) series. The studio also developed notable Famicom titles such as Door Door, Famicom Jump, and Famicom Jump II. They would later establish the influential Fushigi no Dungeon (Mystery Dungeon) franchise.
Following its establishment, the developer refined its programming capabilities through early projects like the puzzle-platformer
Door Door (1985) and the port of
Tetris (1988) for Japanese home consoles. Chunsoft's technical expertise led to collaborations with Enix and Shueisha, resulting in the crossover role-playing game
Famicom Jump (1989) and its sequel
Famicom Jump II (1991). During this period, the studio also developed the science-fiction adventure game
Jesus (1989) and the action-adventure title
Warrior (1983).
The studio's foundational work on the
Dragon Quest franchise culminated in the localized North American releases of
Dragon Warrior (1989) and
Dragon Warrior II (1990). These releases adapted the Japanese role-playing formula for Western audiences, introducing battery-backed save features and revised English dialogue. This specialized experience in grid-based movement, menu-driven combat, and procedural generation laid the groundwork for the subsequent evolution of the
Fushigi no Dungeon series, cementing the developer's legacy in shaping the console role-playing genre.
