Cyan Inc. is a video game developer founded in 1987 by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller. The studio achieved massive critical and commercial success with the release of the graphic adventure game Myst in 1993, which spawned a major franchise, following their early work on the interactive children's title The Manhole.
Following the success of their early software projects, the developer refined their interactive design philosophy with the 1991 release of
The Manhole, which utilized CD-ROM technology to expand their signature point-and-click exploration. This expertise laid the groundwork for their next project,
Myst, which entered active production in 1992. To build anticipation for the game's revolutionary pre-rendered 3D graphics, Cyan distributed
Myst [Demo] and
Myst [CD Demo] in 1993, offering players an early glimpse of the atmospheric island.
Following the initial launch, Cyan focused on expanding the game's reach. The 1994 releases of
Myst on broader personal computer platforms secured its status as a cultural phenomenon and a killer app for the CD-ROM format. To capitalize on this success, Cyan collaborated with various publishers to port the experience to home consoles. This resulted in multiple 1995 editions of
Myst for platforms like the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, as well as highly specialized regional releases, such as the unique
Myst [Tec Toy] version localized for the Brazilian market. These iterations cemented the studio's reputation for pioneering immersive, narrative-driven virtual environments.
