KAZe Co. Ltd. is a Japanese game developer best known for creating the surreal NES shooter Zombie Nation. The company later specialized in highly regarded pinball simulations, developing the Super Pinball series for the SNES and the Digital Pinball series, including Last Gladiators and Necronomicon, for the Sega Saturn.
The transition from the bizarre 2D aesthetic of
Zombie Nation (1991) to advanced physics engines defined the developer's 1990s output. In
Super Pinball (1994) and its sequel
Super Pinball II (1995), the studio utilized Mode 7 graphical capabilities to simulate realistic table perspectives and ball movement.
This technical expertise culminated during the 32-bit era. With
Digital Pinball (1995) and
Digital Pinball: Last Gladiators (1995), the team leveraged CD-ROM technology to deliver high-resolution table art, dynamic multi-angle views, and redbook audio soundtracks. The subsequent release,
Digital Pinball: Necronomicon (1996), integrated Lovecraftian horror themes with intricate table designs and a heavy metal soundtrack. During this highly active period, the studio also developed
Z (1995) and
Mask (1996), expanding their portfolio into different genres while maintaining their reputation for distinct visual styles and precise mechanical design.
