Pyramid Inc. is a Japanese game development studio established in 2001. The company is highly recognized for its collaboration with Japan Studio on the rhythm-action game Patapon and its sequel Patapon 2 for the PlayStation Portable. Additionally, Pyramid developed the shoot 'em up title Darius Burst in partnership with Taito.
The studio's work on the
Patapon franchise spanned multiple specialized releases and promotional editions. The original
Patapon (2008) was supported by
Patapon [Demo] (2008) to introduce players to its unique rhythm-based command system, while
Patapon [Not for Resale] (2008) served promotional purposes prior to launch. Following its critical success, the game received budget-line re-releases including
Patapon [Favorites] (2008) and
Patapon [Greatest Hits] (2008).
For the sequel,
Patapon 2 (2009), the studio participated in an early digital distribution experiment in North America, where the game was sold in retail stores as a boxed case containing only the
Patapon 2 [Downloadable Game Voucher] (2009) rather than a physical UMD.
In the same era, the developer expanded its portfolio with
Darius Burst (2009), revitalizing a classic arcade property. This release maintained the series' traditional horizontal scrolling and branching stage paths while introducing new burst mechanics and a widescreen presentation tailored to portable hardware.
