Revolution Software Ltd. is a British game developer renowned for its influential point-and-click adventure games. The studio created acclaimed titles such as Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky, and established the highly successful Broken Sword franchise starting in 1996. They also handled the European release of the horror game D in 1996.
Founded in 1990 by Charles Cecil, Tony Warriner, David Sykes, and Noirin Carmody, the studio pioneered the Virtual Theatre engine. This proprietary technology debuted in
Lure of the Temptress (1992) and was refined for
Beneath a Steel Sky (1994), allowing non-player characters to move independently through the game world. The commercial success of these titles led to budget re-releases, such as
Lure Of The Temptress [Hit Squad] (1994).
In 1996, the developer expanded its portfolio by publishing the European PlayStation release of Kenji Eno's horror game
D (1996), which also saw a North American release as
D [Long Box] (1996). That same year, the studio launched
Broken Sword (1996), initiating a landmark franchise centered on protagonists George Stobbart and Nicole Collard. Beyond narrative adventures, the company diversified its output by developing multiple video game adaptations for the
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire franchise during the early 2000s. These releases solidified the studio's versatility in adapting high-profile intellectual properties across different gameplay formats.
