About

Shift is a Japanese game development studio established in 1998. They debuted with the acclaimed PlayStation puzzle game XI [Sai] (released as Devil Dice internationally), which spawned sequels like XI [Sai] Jumbo, Xi Go, and Bombastic. In later years, Shift became well-known for developing the action role-playing series God Eater, including God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2 Rage Burst.
The concept for XI [Sai] originated from a Net Yaroze game creation contest entry, which led to the formal establishment of the development team to realize the project for Sony Computer Entertainment. This debut and its immediate follow-up, XI [Sai] Jumbo, established the studio's early reputation for innovative puzzle mechanics centered on rolling dice to match face values. The franchise continued to evolve with Xi Go for the PlayStation 2 and Bombastic, which introduced explosive chain-reaction mechanics to the established formula.
Transitioning from puzzle games to high-speed action, the studio partnered closely with Bandai Namco to create the cooperative monster-hunting God Eater intellectual property. This shift in genre culminated in major eighth-generation console releases. God Eater Resurrection rebuilt the franchise's debut title with updated graphics, new weapon styles, and refined combat systems. Similarly, God Eater 2 Rage Burst served as an enhanced definitive edition of the mainline sequel, introducing the powerful "Blood Rage" gameplay mechanic and expanding the narrative. These titles solidified the developer's versatility, moving from niche puzzle design to mainstream, multiplayer-focused action role-playing games.
