Datam Polystar was a Japanese publisher that released several titles for platforms like the Super Famicom, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation. They are best known for publishing the Makeruna! Makendou franchise, including the original 1993 action game and its 1995 fighting game sequel. Their catalog also includes the puzzle games Cacoma Knight and Keeper, as well as RPGs like Youchien Senki Madara and Dragon Master Silk.
Established as a software publishing subsidiary of the Japanese record label Polystar, the company leveraged its parent organization's audio-visual expertise to produce games with strong anime and musical influences. An early success in their puzzle lineup was
Cacoma Knight (1992), which adapted classic territory-capturing gameplay.
The publisher's signature property,
Makeruna Makendou (1993), established a media franchise that grew to include anime adaptations and the fighting game sequel
Makeruna Makendou 2 (1995), also released as
Makeruna! Makendo 2 (1995). These titles featured character designs by manga artist Kenichi Sonoda.
Datam Polystar continued to diversify its portfolio with
Keeper (1994), an isometric puzzle title, and
Shichuu Suimei Pitagraph (1996), a unique fortune-telling simulation. Their later years focused on role-playing games, notably
Youchien Senki Madara (1996), a parody spin-off of the popular Madara manga series, and
Dragon Master Silk (1997), a dungeon crawler that utilized extensive voice acting and animated sequences to align with the company's multimedia focus.
