Founded in 2001 by former MacSoft president Peter Tamte, Destineer published and developed video games for various platforms including PC, Macintosh, Nintendo DS, and Wii. The company was known for bringing Japanese titles to North America, such as the Taito Legends compilations, and also operated publishing labels like MacSoft and Bold Games.
The company secured key licensing agreements to distribute major international properties, focusing heavily on retro compilations and casual software. Through a partnership with Japanese developer Taito, the publisher released
Taito Legends (2000) and its 2005 edition, bringing decades of arcade history to home consoles. This collaboration continued with
Taito Legends 2 (2000) and its 2007 follow-up, as well as the portable compilation
Taito Legends Power-Up (2006) and its 2007 release.
In addition to arcade classics, the publisher expanded into the casual gaming market with titles like the culinary simulation
Burger Island (2007). It also engaged in high-profile localization partnerships, notably associating with the release of the action role-playing game
It's a Wonderful World (2007). These releases allowed the company to bridge the gap between niche overseas markets and mainstream retail channels. Operations continued until the company quietly wound down its publishing activities and ceased operations in 2011, with its remaining assets and licenses sold off to other industry distributors.
