Team17 is a British video game publisher and developer established in 1990. The company gained initial prominence by supporting the Commodore Amiga with popular titles like Alien Breed, Superfrog, and Body Blows, before achieving massive global success with the Worms franchise.
Formed through a merger between 17-Bit Software and Team 7, the company initially focused on developing software for home computers. Early portfolio additions included the 1993 Amiga release of
Qwak, a puzzle-platformer originally designed in 1987. The company expanded its signature franchises with iterative releases and sequels, such as
Alien Breed: Special Edition 92 and the 1994 sci-fi shooter
Alien Breed: Tower Assault.
In the fighting game genre, the developer followed its 1993 release of
Body Blows with the compilation title
Ultimate Body Blows in 1994, which merged characters from previous entries for MS-DOS and Amiga systems. During this same period, the studio diversified its output into sports simulation with
Arcade Pool and platforming with
Superfrog in 1994.
In the 2010s, the company transitioned into a major indie games publisher, launching a publishing label to support external developers. This shift resulted in the distribution of highly successful third-party titles, transforming the business from a dedicated development studio into a prolific international publishing house listed on the London Stock Exchange.
