The series adapted the popular animated show into video games, starting with the 2012 release "Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!!" for Nintendo DS and 3DS. This was followed by the 2013 multiplayer dungeon crawler "Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know!". These early titles in the franchise were developed by WayForward Technologies.
The subsequent release,
Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know!, expanded the franchise's reach to home consoles, including the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. It featured a massive, hundred-floor subterranean crawl beneath the Candy Kingdom. Series creator Pendleton Ward collaborated directly on the storylines of both projects, ensuring the games maintained the television show's signature surreal humor. Additionally, these early entries featured voice work from the show's original voice cast and chiptune-inspired soundtracks composed by Jake Kaufman, setting a high standard for the franchise's audio-visual presentation.
