The series began with the 1986 Sega Master System classic Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which served as a flagship platformer for the console. It saw a modern revival with the 2021 remake Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX and its physical Signature Edition releases. The legacy of the original game also inspired the 2017 fan-made sequel Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2.
Designed by Kotaro Hayashida, the original
Alex Kidd in Miracle World was initially planned as a licensed
Dragon Ball title before transitioning into Sega's premier intellectual property of the era. The gameplay distinguished itself from contemporary platformers by incorporating puzzle-like elements, breakable blocks, and collectible money bags used to purchase vehicles such as the Sukopako Motorcycle and the Peticopter. Boss encounters famously abandoned traditional combat in favor of high-stakes Rock-Paper-Scissors (Janken) matches.
Decades later, developer Jankenteam and publisher Merge Games expanded upon this foundation with
Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX. This release integrated brand-new levels, redesigned boss fights, and a toggle feature enabling players to switch instantly between modern high-definition art and classic 8-bit visuals. For collectors, the physical
Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX [Signature Edition] and
Alex Kidd in Miracle World [Signature Edition] packages bundled the software with memorabilia, including a physical manual, an art book, and a medallion. The enduring community passion also manifested in
Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2, a homebrew ROM hack that utilized original assets to construct entirely new stages and challenges for dedicated enthusiasts.
