The series began with the release of Andro Dunos in the early 1990s, appearing on Neo Geo MVS and AES formats. Decades later, the franchise was revived with the release of the sequel Andro Dunos II in 2022, which saw physical releases including the Limited Edition and MVS Edition.
Developed by Visco Corporation, the gameplay of the original
Andro Dunos (1993) distinguishes itself through a unique weapon-selection system. Players control the Yellow Cherry or Red Fox spacecraft, cycling through four distinct weapon configurations on the fly to adapt to various enemy formations and environmental hazards. This tactical mechanic remained central across subsequent iterations and re-releases, including the
Andro Dunos (1993),
Andro Dunos (1994), and
Andro Dunos (1995) versions, alongside the home console cartridge release
Andro Dunos [AES] (1995).
After a long hiatus, the intellectual property was licensed by PixelHeart, leading to a modern Dreamcast port of the original
Andro Dunos (2021). This revival paved the way for the official sequel developed by Picorinne Soft. The sequel preserved the core weapon-swapping loop while introducing modernized 2.5D visuals and updated stage designs. This release was celebrated by retro enthusiasts through specialized physical packages, notably
Andro Dunos II [Limited Edition] (2022) and
Andro Dunos II [MVS Edition] (2022), the latter of which paid homage to the franchise's arcade roots.
