The Arcade's Greatest Hits Atari Collection is a series of compilation video games that brought classic Atari arcade titles to home consoles in the late 1990s. The series includes Arcade's Greatest Hits: The Atari Collection 1, released in 1996 and 1997, and Arcade's Greatest Hits: The Atari Collection 2, released in 1998. These compilations featured emulated versions of seminal arcade games such as Asteroids, Battlezone, Centipede, Tempest, and Gauntlet.
Developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Midway Games, this landmark series utilized advanced emulation technology to run original arcade ROMs on home consoles. The debut title,
Arcade's Greatest Hits Atari Collection 1 (1996), was released for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. In 1997, the series expanded with
Arcade's Greatest Hits Atari Collection (1997) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis, alongside
Arcade's Greatest Hits Atari Collection 1 (1997) for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. These releases introduced accurate console ports of
Missile Command and
Super Breakout.
The follow-up,
Arcade's Greatest Hits Atari Collection 2 (1998), arrived on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn, adding
Marble Madness,
Millipede,
Paperboy,
RoadBlasters, and
Crystal Castles to the franchise's library. Beyond gameplay, these compilations served as early efforts in video game preservation. They featured supplemental multimedia galleries containing historical trivia, original cabinet art, and video interviews with legendary Atari programmers like Ed Logg and Dave Theurer, establishing a format for future retro compilations.
