The series debuted with Criminal Girls in 2010 for the PlayStation Portable, which was later remastered as Criminal Girls: Invite Only in 2015. It received a direct sequel, Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors, which continued the franchise's signature RPG gameplay and character rehabilitation mechanics.
Developed by Imageepoch and published by Nippon Ichi Software, the franchise centers on a Program Conductor tasked with guiding female souls through the depths of Hell. To prepare these characters for reincarnation, players engage in tactical turn-based battles where the party members propose their own actions rather than accepting direct commands.
The series gained notoriety outside Japan for its controversial "Motivation" minigames, which required players to administer various punishments to unlock new combat skills. When NIS America localized
Criminal Girls: Invite Only (2015) for the PlayStation Vita and PC, certain visual and audio elements of these minigames were edited to secure a mature rating. This release was accompanied by several physical variants, including the
Criminal Girls: Invite Only [Limited Edition] (2015).
The localization challenges intensified with the Western release of
Criminal Girls 2 (2015), published in English as
Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors (2016). Despite receiving a physical
Criminal Girls 2: Party Favors Limited Edition (2016) package, the game was refused classification in Australia and underwent further edits in other regions due to its suggestive themes, cementing the franchise's reputation as a cult, boundary-pushing RPG series.
