About
The Death Stranding series began with the release of the self-titled game in 2019, which was also released in Special and Collector's Editions. Developed by Kojima Productions, the franchise is set in a post-apocalyptic world where players deliver cargo to reconnect a fractured society. It is characterized by its unique cooperative multiplayer elements and cinematic narrative.
Conceived by director Hideo Kojima following his departure from Konami, the franchise represents his first independent project. The core 2019 releases, including the standard Death Stranding, Death Stranding [Special Edition], and Death Stranding [Collector's Edition], gained significant attention for their high-profile Hollywood cast. Actors Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and director Guillermo del Toro provided likenesses and performances for the main characters.
The gameplay mechanics emphasize realistic traversal physics, requiring players to balance cargo weight, manage stamina, and navigate hazardous terrain populated by invisible entities known as Beached Things (BTs). The Death Stranding [Collector's Edition] became highly sought after by fans for its physical pack-ins, most notably a life-sized replica of the game's iconic Bridge Baby (BB) pod.
Following the initial PlayStation 4 launch, the title expanded to PC in 2020 and received an enhanced Director's Cut in 2021, which introduced new combat mechanics, racing modes, and expanded story areas. The franchise's commercial success and distinct artistic vision led to the announcement of a theatrical film adaptation and a direct sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
