The Guitar Hero on Tour series brought the popular rhythm franchise to the Nintendo DS handheld console. Starting with Guitar Hero On Tour in 2008 and continuing with Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits in 2009, the games required a specialized 'Guitar Grip' peripheral inserted into the console's Game Boy Advance slot to simulate guitar frets.
Developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision, this portable spin-off series adapted the franchise's signature note-highway interface to the dual-screen layout. Players used a stylus on the Nintendo DS touch screen to simulate strumming while pressing the fret buttons on the peripheral. The top screen displayed the performance meter, crowd reactions, and character animations.
The debut release,
Guitar Hero On Tour (2008), was made available individually, as a
Guitar Hero On Tour [Pre-Order] (2008) promotion, and in a retail
Guitar Hero On Tour [Bundle] (2008) that packaged the software with the necessary hardware. Multiplayer functionality allowed two players to compete or cooperate via local wireless connection, introducing unique battle items like screen-obscuring graffiti.
The subsequent release,
Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits (2009), updated the setlist with contemporary rock tracks. It was distributed as a standalone cartridge and as part of the
Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits [Guitar Bundle] (2009), which included a redesigned grip adapter to accommodate the physical dimensions of the Nintendo DS Lite. The series concluded as hardware transitions to the Nintendo DSi, which lacked the necessary cartridge slot, rendered the physical grip incompatible with newer console iterations.
