The Kid Icarus series began with the 1986 NES release (and its 1987/1988 regional variants), followed by the Game Boy sequel Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters in 1992. After a long hiatus, the franchise was revived on the Nintendo 3DS with Kid Icarus: Uprising in 2012. The series blends Greek mythology-inspired themes with platforming and shoot 'em up gameplay.
Developed by Nintendo R&D1 under producer Gunpei Yokoi, the franchise centers on the angel Pit and his quest to protect the realm of Angel Land. The original Famicom Disk System release of
Kid Icarus (1986) transitioned to the Nintendo Entertainment System for its international debuts, appearing as
Kid Icarus (1987) in North America—which included the highly collectible
Kid Icarus [5 Screw] (1987) cartridge variation—and
Kid Icarus (1988) in Europe.
The intellectual property remained dormant after the release of
Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters (1992) on the Game Boy until director Masahiro Sakurai spearheaded its modern reinvention. The resulting Nintendo 3DS title,
Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012), introduced third-person rail-shooting and ground combat. This major release was accompanied by specialized retail packages, including the
Kid Icarus: Uprising [Big Box] (2012) edition, which bundled the software with a specialized plastic stand and AR cards, alongside the companion publication
Kid Icarus: Uprising [Prima] (2012) strategy guide. Pit's prominent role in the
Super Smash Bros. crossover series has further cemented the franchise's legacy within Nintendo's history.
