The Monster Hunter Stories series is a turn-based role-playing spin-off of Capcom's action RPG franchise. Beginning with Monster Hunter Stories in 2017, the series focuses on Riders who form bonds with monsters rather than hunting them. The series continued with the sequel Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin in 2021, and saw remastered releases on modern platforms in 2024.
Gameplay in this spin-off branch centers on collecting and hatching monster eggs to raise companions known as "Monsties." Players engage in battles utilizing a strategic three-way tactical system based on Power, Speed, and Technical attacks, alongside riding beasts to traverse environments.
The sub-series debuted internationally on the Nintendo 3DS with
Monster Hunter Stories (2017). This release established the core mechanics of kinship attacks and overworld traversal using Monstie abilities. The narrative expanded with the launch of
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin (2021) for the Nintendo Switch and PC, which introduced cooperative multiplayer dungeons and refined combat mechanics. This sequel also received a physical
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin [Collector's Edition] (2021) featuring exclusive amiibo and cosmetic downloadable content.
To preserve the origins of the sub-franchise, Capcom released an updated version of
Monster Hunter Stories (2024) for modern platforms, featuring high-definition graphics, full voice acting, and a museum mode. The success of these titles helped broaden the demographic appeal of the parent franchise, inspiring anime adaptations and merchandise.
