About

The Nintendo World Championships series, inspired by the historic 1990 competitive event, became a dedicated video game franchise with 2024 releases including Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition and its Deluxe and Famicom counterparts. These games challenge players to complete bite-sized speedrunning trials across various classic Nintendo Entertainment System titles. The series focuses on competitive leaderboards, local multiplayer, and recreating the competitive spirit of the original tournament.
The franchise traces its roots to the physical 1990 tournament cartridge, which became one of the rarest and most valuable collector's items in video game history. While Nintendo hosted subsequent live tournaments in 2015 and 2017, the concept transitioned into a commercial home console series on the Nintendo Switch.
The 2024 product lineup includes Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, which features over 150 challenges across 13 classic titles such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. This release was accompanied by Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Set Deluxe, which bundled the physical game with a gold-colored replica NES cartridge and art cards. In Japan, the game was released as Nintendo World Championships: Famicom, celebrating the region's original hardware. Additionally, the Nintendo World Championships [Special Edition] physical packages offered collectors themed memorabilia. Gameplay features include "Survival Mode," where players compete asynchronously against ghost data of varying difficulty tiers, and a "Legendary" category that tests players with long-form objectives.
